Fishing Overview:  COD FISHING

Arguably the most important food fish in the northeast Atlantic Ocean, the Atlantic cod is tauted for its rich fishing history and delicious taste. Wars, economies, and the settlement by Europeans of North America can all be credited to the pursuit of this bearded and brown-to-greenish freckled species.  Although over-harvested in past years, recent successful management of the species has made great recreational fishing for cod possible once again. The approach to catching the historic cod varies depending on the time of year and temperament of the fish.

Generally, expect to use the following techniques on these trips: Jigging; Bottom Fishing rigs (Bait: clam) with up to 2 hooks; 10-18 oz sinkers (depending on depth and/or tide). Typical tackle used: 7' to 8' (20-40lb) class rods, conventional reels with 40-60lb braided or 20-30lb monofilament line.
