Fishing Overview: Striped Bass (NYC)

The striped bass is the most popular inshore gamefish of northeastern Atlantic Ocean waters. It is a majestic fish, renown for its powerful fighting ability and hook-spitting head shakes. They are cunning, elusive, and extremely challenging to catch. The beauty of this fish is unmatched, with its silver and blue hues, dotted lines that streak across the body, and even the eyes and large gaping mouth will make a bystander stare in awe. The world record striped bass (78lbs 8oz) was caught off a jetty by a surf fisherman in Atlantic City, NJ. From Maine down to Virginia, millions of anglers cast out lures (called “plugs” by locals) or bait (called “chunks” by locals) trying to entice a mammoth migrating striped bass to bite.

Generally, expect to use the following techniques on these trips: Free-lining Menhaden (Bunker) chunks or Live-lining Menhaden (Bunker). Typical tackle used: 15-40lb class rods, conventional reels with 20-30lb monofilament line.
